A world of play and discovery

Sustainability

At Essex Heights Juniors, we’re passionate about helping children understand how their actions can make a difference.

Our Sustainability Program focuses on the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, while also teaching the importance of water and energy conservation and nature-based learning. Through hands-on experiences, we aim to nurture respect and care for the environment — values that children can carry with them for life.

Sustainable practices are part of our everyday routines and learning experiences. Children are encouraged to:

Use recyclable materials wherever possible

Use recyclable materials wherever possible

Learn about electricity by switching off lights and appliances when not in use

Discover the natural decomposition cycle through our worm farms and composting food scraps

Take part in fun “garden to plate” activities like planting seeds, weeding, harvesting vegetables, and cooking

Learn how to care for animals and plants, both in our classrooms and through visiting pet services

Explore how to protect our waterways and use water responsibly

Participate in excursions and incursions that highlight sustainability in action

Involve their families in our sustainability initiatives, extending learning beyond the classroom

By weaving sustainability into everyday play and learning, we help children develop a sense of responsibility, empathy, and appreciation for the world around them.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, as the first people of the land on which we work, play and learn. We honour and pay our respect to their Elders, past and present as well as those emerging.
