A world of play and discovery

First Nations Education

At Essex Heights Juniors, we believe in fostering respect, inclusivity, and cultural awareness from a young age.

At Essex Heights Juniors, we are deeply committed to fostering respect, inclusivity, and cultural awareness from the very start of a child’s learning journey. By integrating First Nations perspectives into our everyday programs, we provide children with meaningful opportunities to understand and celebrate Australia’s rich Indigenous heritage while developing empathy, appreciation, and respect for the country’s traditional custodians.

Our approach includes exploring music, stories, art, language, and connection to Country, allowing children to engage with Aboriginal culture in ways that are authentic, hands-on, and age-appropriate. These experiences help children form a strong sense of identity and belonging, while also encouraging curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

Through these programs, children not only gain knowledge and awareness but also develop a sense of responsibility and respect for cultural diversity. This foundation helps them grow into thoughtful, socially conscious individuals who value community, tradition, and the world around them.

This is incorporated into our educational programs through:

Music and movement

Exploring cultural songs, rhythms, and movement

Dreamtime stories

Sharing traditional yarns.

Art and symbols

Learning about Aboriginal artwork and its meanings.

Language

Introducing children to words and phrases from First Nations languages, especially Woiwurrung which is the language of the Wurundjeri People.

Connection to Country

Understanding the deep spiritual connection between First Nations Peoples and the land.

Aboriginal Art Program

Our service has connected with The Little Wombats Program to provide authentic art lessons with our Indigenous teacher. This monthly program allows children to express themselves through art, learning about the tools, methods, and purpose of symbols used by First Nations cultures as their form of communication and self-expression.

The Little Wombats Program has been endorsed by LAECG Uncle Keith Randall and VAEAI in partnership with Department of Education.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, as the first people of the land on which we work, play and learn. We honour and pay our respect to their Elders, past and present as well as those emerging.
